FAMILY LIFE
The Mirror (1975, PG), directed by Russian Andrei Tarkovsky, is his most overtly autobiographical film, to the extent that his own family were involved in the film. Three epochs in Tarkovsky’s life and that of his parents meld and slip in and out of its narrative focus: his childhood and his parent’s marriage in the 1930s; survival during the Second World War; and Tarkovsky’s own troubled marital life in the 1960s. Arc Cinema, National Film and Sound Archive, 2pm. Tickets $12/$9. Bookings: 6248 2000.
WAR STORY
Trial on the Road (1971, Unclassified 18+), directed by Aleksei Guerman, was banned by the Soviets for 15 years. It was inspired by a real case and tells the story of Lazarev (Vladimir Zamanskiy), a Junior Sergeant in the Red Army, who defected to the Nazis and, as the film begins, has switched sides yet again and is forced to prove his patriotism via a series of increasingly perilous missions. Arc Cinema, National Film and Sound Archive, 4.30pm. Tickets $12/$9. Bookings: 6248 2000.
