It is an outstandingly detailed work, with a feeling of close contact, capturing a distant memory and a return to the past. At first sight the objects look like pebbles but they are highly-worked pieces of glass, 'almost like talismans'." Hellsing was the only finalist from Australia and there were 39 finalists included in the exhibition this year. Her work will be exhibited with other shortlisted candidates in the gallery Art Salon S in the Dancing House, in Prague, until December 14, if you feel like popping in.

Midweek jazz
And why not? The Friends of the School of Music are holding their annual fund-raising concert on Wednesday, October 15 - this year titled "Gershwin and Ellington", complete with cabaret-feel and cash bar. Flags and Modulations at Gorman
Peter Vandermark modular on us with his latest show at CCAS, referencing big names like Malevich and Mondrian. His sculptures are made up of pieces that seem to exist independently. "There are periscopes or 'shoe gazers' painted in primary colours attached to the wall that actually work to show your feet. He also aims to confuse the audience with works made from airconditioning ducts and lighting spheres, just like those in modern buildings, while looking more like robots of the future," says the gallery. Modulations14 QLD Nations, by Archie Moore, are showing at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Gorman House, 55 Ainslie Avenue, Braddon, until November 15.
Summer art experience
The Artists Society of Canberra has early-bird discounts for its next Summer Art Experience, a chance to meet and work with several contemporary Australian artists. Held over five days at Kingsford Smith School, Holt from January 12-16, 8.30am-5pm, and divided into 12 individual workshops, the program is designed for aspiring artists, and caters to all skill levels.
Daddy Art Days
Well, dads, now's your chance to get out of Saturday morning sport runs, in favour of art runs instead. Tuggeranong Arts Centre is running Daddy Art Days, a Saturday morning art class aimed at dads and their primary school kids. Held over nine weeks, the course explores a variety of media and techniques with tutor Mary Firkins. The classes run from 10.30am-12.30pm over a nine-week term starting on Saturday, October 18, at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre, 137 Reed Street, Greenway. The cost is $60 per dad and child couple. On the verge at Form
There's a beautiful new show on at Form Gallery in Queanbeyan, showing work by a painter, a sculptor and a poet. Painter Sharon Field, sculptor Natalie Maras and poet Elizabeth Lawson have merged their reflections to present "moments of union, flowering, fading, seeding, dying, struggle and rebirth" in the lives of rare and common plants. "Sharon Field's exquisitely fine graphite and watercolour works on vellum and paper are world-class. Natalie Maras' use of polymer clay is innovative, exciting and delicately rendered. The much-honoured poetry of Elizabeth Lawson complements these artworks with subtle and beautiful language." On the Verge is showing at Form Studio and Gallery, 1/30 Aurora Avenue, Queanbeyan, until October 30.
Death Becomes Her
Who can go past a lecture on Victoriana – especially rituals involving mourning? On Sunday, National Portrait Gallery curator Joanna Gilmour will be talking on Sunday will talk about the complex dress codes surrounding death and mourning observed during the Victorian Era and the evidence of these codes in costumes and portraiture. The talk is part of the gallery's Flight of Fashion series, dedicated to discussing the importance of fashion in portraiture, exploring topics from headwear to underwear. Death Becomes Her, with Joanna Gilmour, is on Sunday, October 12, at 2pm. Entry is free.
Les Theatreux at the Alliance
There's some great stuff happening at the Alliance Francaise in Turner lately. Next Friday night, French theatre company Les Theatreux is presenting "an evening of short plays, comedies, tragedies, solo performances and games, in a relaxed atmosphere, accompanied by a delicious buffet dinner (vegetarian options). If you want to share a talent, read a poem or play an instrument, you are welcome to hop on the stage! It will be a good opportunity for you to work on your French as the show will be entirely in French. Don't hesitate to join if you're not sure you'll understand, though: the food will be delicious for everybody!" Sounds tres amusant! Les Theatreux is playing at the Alliance Francaise, 66 McCaughey Street, Turner, October 17 at 7pm. Tickets $25, with a discount for members. RSVP before October 13.
Clearwater by the river
The Clearwater Sculpture Prize, Queanbeyan's very own Sculpture by the River, is showing for the first time this weekend, with 25 sculptures installed along the riverbank under the bridge on the eastern foreshore of the river – right in front of the Riverbank Cafe, via Trinculo Place or Waniassa Street. The main prizes will be announced on the main stage today at noon.
Potters' open day
The Canberra Potters' Society is opening its doors tomorrow for its 2014 Open Day, a chance to see potters in action and see some demonstrations of hand-building and throwing on a pottery wheel. There will be children's clay activities to keep the younger ones occupied and Raku firing demonstrations throughout the day. For just $5 you can glaze a ready-made pot, watch as it's fired in a Raku kiln and then take it home with you. There will also be the popular selection of soup bowls for sale – and free soup with every purchase, as well as ceramic artworks, jewellery and homewares. The Canberra Potters Society open day is on Sunday, October 12, 10am-2pm, at Watson Arts Centre, Aspinall Street, Watson.
Collages at Megalo
Rose Montebello is showing new works over at Megalo✓, in Kingston, an exhibition of nine "exquisitely detailed and painstakingly hand-cut collages on paper. Rose uses processes of multiplicity, dissection and assemblage to examine subjects such as temporality and the human experience of nature in order to reflect the very moment between life and death," says Megalo. Unravel, by Rose Montebello, is showing at Megalo Print Studio and Gallery, 21 Wentworth Avenue, Kingston, until October 18.
