Get over to M16 Artspace this weekend to catch the end of Carmel McCrow's Wrapped in Sky. She gives this description: "Sky … the result of an ancient explosion still in progress. The universe, still expanding, constantly changing, a living environment where sparks continue to fly. Above is the immeasurable scale and complexity of the universe, from which our minds, having immense capacity for thought and imagination, offers a vast array of manifestations. The sense of scale is majestic, inviting contemplation of the infinite, but with air and light movement constantly affecting change in colour, intensity and patterning, can also offer intimate glimpses of what may lie beyond our mundane world, to the sublime."

Bird's eye view
Former Canberra Times book reviewer and sometime contributor Ian Fraser was always a pleasure to deal with. So we're giving his latest book Birds in Their Habitats a little plug. Fraser is a naturalist and conservationist who's lived in the region since 1980, working for us and the ABC over the years.
His latest book explores the love affair "birders" have with our feathered friends, starting with his own story where as a young boy he began recording lists of all the birds he had seen on a family holiday. He takes us through four continents on a journey of discovery with humour, insight and a deep knowledge and love for the subject.

Dissecting design
United Constructs is a new series of etchings and screen printed works by Canberra artist and designer Megan Hinton. Influenced by the Bauhaus design movement, Russian Constructivism and abstraction, it takes inspiration from the built environment, carefully dissecting each segment, line and shape to create newly constructed compositions of repurposed architectural forms.
Hinton works with printmaking, textile design, painting and collaborative projects. Her works explore the interaction of colour and form, with her recent work strongly influenced by geometric abstraction, constructivism and Bauhaus textiles. She also produces a range of screen printed scarves, homewares and furniture products under the label Megan Jackson.

Written rule
Reflections brings together some interesting work from the Calligraphy Society of Canberra.
First formed in 1986, the society now has about 65 members, from professional calligraphers to those who like to dabble in the art.
There are workshops on the fourth Sunday of every month covering techniques such as painting, gilding, book binding, leaf printing, Celtic knot-work, marbling, embossing, origami and stamping.
The society is not a guild in the sense that a minimum standard or proficiency in calligraphy is required - the only prerequisites are a desire to learn and improve your skills and a wish to share your enthusiasm with others.
Get along to the exhibition at the Yarralumla Gallery and Brasserie from March 25.
Queer screen
One of Australia's most important documentaries, 1980's Witches and Faggots, Dykes and Poofters, is screening as part of the Queer Screen's 25th Mardi Gras Film Festival coming to the National Film and Sound Archive next weekend.
It's the story of the very first Mardi Gras told by those who were there – now proudly known as "the 78ers". With the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, this timely digital restoration was part of the NFSA Restores program.
Also screening are Signature Move, A Moment in the Reeds, Sensitivity Training and a behind-the-scenes documentary about The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin.
