SAFIA vocalist Ben Woolner said a fan directed them to a newly released video by American singer Ariana Grande yesterday which bore a striking resemblance to one of their own.

"We watched the Ariana video and we were like, 'yeah it's kind of similar'. At least they've reworked it a bit. But that last shot is frame-by-frame exactly the same," said Woolner.

"It's pretty close to be a coincidence."

SAFIA's clip for their track You Are The One from September 2014 opens on static, and shows a young woman getting out of a car after having a fight with a male and running down a street amongst a chaotic apocalyptic scene under a pink sky. The clip ends with the woman in a passionate embrace with another man, while meteors fall and it ends again on static.

Ariana Grande's clip for One Last Time, which was released yesterday, also starts with static, and shows Grande getting out of a car after a fight with a male, then walking down a street and into a building amongst a chaotic, apocalyptic scene where meteors fall from the pink sky. The clip ends with a shot of Grande in a passionate embrace with a man, before a meteor falls and it returns to static.

Director of the SAFIA clip, Jimmy Ennett from Crux Media first came up with the idea after the band played him the song back in March 2014.

"Jimmy went rigorously online and searched the idea to make sure it hadn't been done before in any form. That idea in its form and the way it was presented was different to other apocalyptic theme," said Woolner.

"But that's how things often work at big labels, they often source ideas from independent acts who probably think they don't have enough to go up against them."

On Monday, SAFIA wrote on their Facebook page: "This might just be coincidence but to us it looks like either the people at Ariana Grande's label or the film maker have seen our clip for 'You Are The One' & reworked the concept a little bit and then straight up stolen and copied some bits...(ESPECIALLY THE END!)"

By Tuesday afternoon, leagues of Grande's fans had taken to Twitter to defend the American songstress.

"We just got the die-hard fans flooding in now with all their death threats. We're a real pop star now," said Woolner.

Film clip director Ennett said he's found the whole situation pretty surreal.

"It's a real shame because we worked really hard on a shoestring to pull that off and yeah it's just sort of all we have are our ideas in this stage of our careers – we don't really have a name or a huge label to buy ideas," he said.

"I'm not claiming the comet theme or the end of the world theme is by any stretch an original idea but it's more the execution of it and it's just those little things that are a little bit too similar."

"It's gone really crazy, I've never been so scared of 13-year-old girls before."

Director of the One Last Time video clip Max Landis, who is the son of film director John Landis, took to Twitter to defend his clip, calling the similarities pure coincidence and rejected the idea he copied the SAFIA clip.

While he admits the two clips are very similar, he rejected the idea he copied the SAFIA clip.

In a further turn of events, Perth band Injured Ninja has accused SAFIA of copying their own 2011 video clip for 'Fallopian Tube Screamer', telling them on Facebook that, "Everyone likes one shot end of the world videos - you aren't special folks".
