The mercury could climb to as high as 30 degrees early next week with daytime temperatures unlikely to dip below 20 degrees from Tuesday, September 29.

Weatherzone senior meteorologist Brett Dutschke said it wasn't unusual for temperatures to jump from wintry to warm during late September and early October.

But a string of upcoming days will be well above average for this time of year.

"It will certainly be a big change from what we had in this past week," Mr Dutschke said.

"From Friday to next Wednesday, temperatures are going be six to 12 degrees above average, at least the daytime temperatures – that's quite a lengthy warm spell."

Mr Dutschke said next Tuesday, October 6, was likely to be the warmest day of the next week and could reach 30 degrees.

It's a stark turnaround from last week's weather including maximum temperatures of 15 degrees or colder from Tuesday to Friday.

"That's one to four degrees below average," Mr Dutschke said.

"Thursday was the coldest with 12.8 degrees."

The next week of weather is looking much more spring-like.

Tuesday and Wednesday are forecast to reach 21 degrees before 22 degrees on Thursday and 25 degrees on Friday.

The beginning of the long weekend will be even warmer with tops of 26 degrees and 28 degrees expected on Saturday and Sunday.

Canberra's second long weekend in a row will also mark the beginning of daylight saving, which starts on Sunday, October 4, 2015.

"There's going to be a lot of sunshine for the whole long weekend and not a lot of wind," Mr Dutschke said.

"The nights will be a lot warmer too."

Mr Dutschke said a weak change moving through Canberra between now and Wednesday was unlikely to lower temperatures by more than a degree or two.

Any rainfall would be sparse.

"Between [Monday night] and Wednesday there's a chance of getting a shower or two or three," he said.

"If any [rain] does occur it will probably only bring a couple of millimetres at most."
