Friday night's cold front brought an unwelcome reminder that spring is still a week and a half away, ushering out days of balmy weather in the high teens.

Rain bands and pockets of sunshine defined Saturday, with downpours and even hail reported across Canberra in the late morning and afternoon.

Snow was also visible from Canberra along the Brindabellas on Saturday morning, while Thredbo and Perisher each received 15 centimetres of fresh snow.

Both ski resorts have a natural snow depth of 135 centimetres for the second-last weekend of winter.

The mercury peaked at 9.5 degrees about 11.30am at Canberra Airport, though 30km/h to 45km/h westerlies pushed the apparent temperature down to 3.2 degrees.

The maximum temperature stayed above 15 degrees every day from Sunday to Friday, with the latter reaching 19 degrees; six above average for this time of year.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Mohammed Nabi said the cold front had caused the unsettled weather, bringing rain to most of the Southern Highlands during the weekend.

"It's the first decent cold front we've had in a few weeks," he said.

"Most places along the great divide were likely to get some form of rainfall [on Saturday]."

Reprieve from the wind and rain is expected to close out the weekend, but temperatures are unlikely to return to the relatively warm maximums enjoyed last week.

Sunday is expected to bring a top of 13 degrees and cloudy conditions, with the winds easing to between 15 and 20 km/h.

Conditions will continue to improve until midweek, when a trough is expected to bring showers to most of NSW and the ACT.

The heaviest rainfall is forecast for the far north coast of NSW, but Canberrans can still expect a wet commute in the middle of their work week.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday are expected to reach 11 degrees, with Friday and Saturday's minimums expected to dip below zero.
