The first-time candidate, and retired Australian Federal Police electronic communications worker, describes himself as apolitical, but believes in the party's philosophy of allowing members to participate in an online poll on each bill before the Senate.

"The real reason I'm running for the Senate is, because like so many of Australia's voters, we've become disenchanted, disillusioned and disappointed with the way the system has been going the broken promises and backflips and appearance of backroom deals being done," he says.

"It gives the people the opportunity, not necessarily the obligation, to vote on the things that are important to them in the Senate, so that people who feel disenchanted or neglected can have a say in Parliament."

If a Flux Party senator is elected, the party's members will have the opportunity to vote in an online poll on each bill before the upper house.

If they are uninterested in the issue they can trade their votes with other members to give themselves an extra vote for the things they are concerned about.

"The Flux member of the house is obliged to vote as a result of the poll in a proportional representation system," he says.

"One of the beauties of the Flux Party is if you're a Labor, Liberal or Greens supporter or anyone else, you can still support them through the Flux Party.

"It's a great system; it gives power back to the people.

"It's really like nothing we've had before; it's a genuine upgrade of how the Parliament system works in Australia."

If he was elected as a senator Hay says he would be "whole-heartedly committed" to voting the way of the Flux Party poll, even if the majority of members went against his personal views.

"My views are no more important than other members of the Flux Party," he says. "I see myself more as a messenger delivering the will of the people to the Senate."

While he classifies himself as an "underdog" in winning a Senate seat, he says changes to Senate voting, making it more difficult for independents and small parties, has upset a lot of voters and a backlash against the major parties was possible.

"I'm really optimistic, the more people I can talk to about Flux … it's a really attractive way of doing government," he says.

"I wouldn't have enrolled as a candidate if I didn't think I had a chance at all."
