As of 9.30pm, Ms Brodtmann had a swing towards her of 1 per cent, and had 58.6 per cent of the two-party-preferred vote.
Claiming a convincing victory in the seat, she thanked voters and volunteers for their hard work in a long, cold Canberra campaign.
She vowed to "keep fighting for Canberra against the cuts to the public service, cuts to national institutions and cuts to decent services, education and health".
Minutes after walking in armed with chocolate crackles and cookies from the polling booths Ms Brodtmann discovered she would be returned.
"I'd been watching at home and couldn't get any sense of what was happening but just as I walked in the door I heard it called," she said. "It's great."
Throughout three weeks of frosty pre-polling Ms Brodtmann said the top concerns raised by voters had been protecting universal healthcare, properly funding education and speeding up the NBN rollout.
Both ALP lower house candidates Andrew Leigh and Ms Brodtmann secured a clear majority against their counterparts.
Ms Brodtmann stuck to an impressive timetable visiting 41 of 43 polling booths across her 1921 square kilometre electorate which spans from Campbell in the north to Tharwa in the south.
"It's been a big day," she said. "I did that in 2010, 2013 and now this term."
The 52-year-old Yarralumla resident said the recent expansion of the electoral boundary made it a tougher to get everywhere and she wasn't able to fit in visits to Oaks Estate or Tharwa.
Concerns about voter boredom were raised during the marathon election campaign but Ms Brodtmann said she felt engaging personally with the community was the best way to curb voter boredom and political apathy.
After derogatory images of two Greens candidates were found taped to the dash of ACT Liberal senator Zed Seselja's campaign van, Ms Brodtmann said it was vital respect was restored in public discourse.
"You have to be respectful of people that put their hand up to take part in any part of the democratic process and I find it really disappointing," she said.
"I see a deterioration in the tone in the civility of public debate. I think in a way that contributes to people being disengaged and feeling disenfranchised."
