A MAN has been found dead on an asylum seeker boat north-east of Christmas Island.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said border protection spotted the boat, believed to be carrying 59 passengers and two crew on board, on Thursday.

Before they boarded the boat, the crew received ''a number'' of reports saying one person on board the asylum seeker boat had a medical condition.

On board, border protection crew found the body of a man and tried to resuscitate him. He could not be revived.

The man's body was transferred to Christmas Island, and Australian Federal Police will investigate his death.

The other passengers were also transferred to Christmas Island, for initial security, health and identity checks.
