The day the Bali Nine were arrested in Denpasar in 2005, Christie Buckingham wrote in her prayer diary, "How dumb can you get and still breathe? Nevertheless Lord, show your mercy."

Little did the Melbourne pastor realise that a decade later, she and her husband Rob would call two of the most prominent members of the infamous drug smuggling group their friends.
"I can tell you, I did not know that I would be up to my neck in mercy," Reverend Buckingham says.
Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were sentenced to death in 2006 for their parts in the infamous foiled heroin smuggling operation.
For more than three years now, Reverend Buckingham and Rob, also a pastor, have regularly travelled to Kerobokan prison to visit "the boys". They are also campaigning for Indonesian President Joko Widodo to withdraw the death sentences, including through the online petition "Mercy Campaign".
With some 70 years of experience as pastors between them, the Buckinghams have met countless people in prison - but none have struck a chord like Chan and Sukumaran.
"I wasn't looking for another thing to do," says Reverend Buckingham of her first meeting with Chan and Sukumaran.
"But I was so impressed with what these guys were achieving."
In the decade since they were arrested and put on death row, Chan, 31, has gained a certificate in ministry and Sukumaran, 33, has studied fine arts under the mentorship of artist Ben Quilty. Chan counsels his fellow inmates and runs a prison church service, while Sukumaran teaches computing, design and runs a T-shirt printing business.
The two are also passionate advocates against drugs. Reverend Buckingham tells of how they managed to convince a teenage friend of her daughter's to stop dabbling in the drug scene and start concentrating at school.
"We've never actually seen people so totally reformed," she says of Chan and Sukumaran. "They're like us now. They weren't. They are now."
But as Indonesia renews its push to combat drugs in the country, Chan and Sukumaran could face the firing squad within months.
"If you knew them, you would not execute them. I can't even bear the thought. These guys have become our friends," she says.
"One of the things that amazes Rob and myself about these boys is their gratitude."
She describes Chan as "naturally talkative" and "jovial - you can't help but like Andrew".
Sukumaran is a "gentle giant".
Reverend Buckingham says Chan and Sukumaran remain hopeful they will be granted clemency because of all the useful work they do in Kerobokan.
But there are still dark days and nights.
"It goes in cycles, as you can understand," she says.
Rob Buckingham was in Indonesia earlier this month when Sukumaran heard that his clemency petition to Mr Widodo had been rejected.
Having spent a couple of hours sitting with him, Buckingham described Sukumaran's reaction as "very surprised and very disappointed".
"He didn't cry, but he did tear up a couple of times. He wants to live."
Christie Buckingham adds that while both men inevitably think about how they would handle the firing squad, their primary concern is for their families.
As Sukumaran begged in a recent message, "just make sure my Mum's OK".
