Small parties prone to split, but some elected members prosper as independents

The unedifying scrap between the leader of the Palmer United Party, Clive Palmer, and Senator Jacqui Lambie from Tasmania looks likely to lead to Lambie leaving the PUP. After Lambie's "demotion" on Wednesday the end of the relationship must be very close. But while it is tempting to concentrate on the clash between these two big personalities there is a larger story.
