The daughter of the former US Secretary of State and former US President, Bill, announced via her Facebook page she is leaving NBC after three years to pursue philanthropic work with the Clinton Foundation and to prepare for the birth of her first child.

However US news outlets have reported that Chelsea, who was hired by the network in 2011 to be a "special correspondent" and earned close to $650,000 a year without any journalism experience, disappointed news executives when she failed to capitalise on her influential little black book.

"NBC hired Chelsea for the stories she could bring in from her influential contacts, and access to Hillary. But they didn't get Chelsea to do any serious work, and they didn't get access to Hillary," Page Six reported.

The last straw, allegedly, was when Hillary gave her first interview following the release of her book, Hard Choices, to Diane Sawyer on rival network ABC in June.

However Chelsea's departure could be a sign of future announcements from the family because should Hillary decide to run for the Oval Office in 2016, Chelsea would have had to sever ties with all media organisations.

Judging from her long resignation letter via social media, the Oxford graduate and Ivy League-educated 34-year-old enjoyed pursuing stories about underprivileged children and people working to encourage education reform in low socio-economic areas.

"I am profoundly grateful to NBC viewers who responded to the stories I shared, providing funds to help expand the reach of those programs and who encouraged their schools' principals, their mayors and local activists to think about how to build similarly transformative programs in their own communities," she wrote.

She isn't the first former First Daughter to be hired by NBC. George W. Bush's daughter Jenna Bush Hager is a reporter for US Today show where she has allowed cameras to tour her childhood home and landed a one-on-one interview with Barack Obama to talk about fatherhood.
