While some believe the Oscar winner's brand has been tarnished for at least a year thanks to hackers stealing and publishing her naked images online, others suggest she should follow the lead of former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins on how to bounce back from a nudity scandal.

Ten years ago after the Newcastle cheerleader was deemed the most beautiful woman in the universe she lost her skirt during a fashion show at a suburban shopping centre in Sydney. Many claimed it was a stunt when she was left on the catwalk red faced and wearing nothing more than a red g-string. She joked and made light hearted comments about the incident for years before going on to land lucrative ambassador deals, presenting roles and her own swimwear line.

Deakin University marketing lecturer Michael Callaghan believes Lawrence now needs to own the story, just like Hawkins did back in 2004, in order to protect her brand.

"If managed well it will increase her value, just as Jennifer Hawkins losing her skirt did at that parade, and all she really needs to do is to continue to lead the story as she and other celebs in the media are," Callaghan said.

"They are clearly on the front foot in turning this into a privacy issue rather than dwelling on the images themselves."

J.Law may bounce back but Perez Hilton and Apple may be permanently scarred following the nude photo scandal that has rocked Hollywood, however one of Australia's most high profile publicity experts Roxy Jacenko says it will take 12 months for the business world to move on.

"Some people will say all PR is good PR, but on this occasion I beg to differ, you're a role model – you're in the public eye – you have all walks of life and ages looking to you, your image needs to reflect that and naked imagery of your most personal parts isn't really going to take your career to the next level," the former Celebrity Apprentice Australia star said.

She said any campaigns that include being the "face of" a product or label would be off the table for the foreseeable future.

"I know from a brand perspective, we would look carefully at the potential brand ambassadors history before booking them. We would be hard pushed to get a talent over the line who had easily google-able imagery of them in compromising position.

"Time heals all and this will be a distant memory in 12 months but for now it's very damaging to their images," she said.

At present, Lawrence only has one official ambassador role as the face of a specific line of Christian Dior handbags, it is not known if the relationship will continue.

Jacenko, who runs her own PR and talent agency and manages Instagram accounts for her two young children, added that the even though the celebrities involved were innocent victims they should have thought twice about taking the photos in the first place.

"Call me boring but I don't get the whole taking pictures of yourself with no clothes on, why put it out there and take the risk? Surely as a high profile person you need to have your wits about you and taking a chance like having imagery in a 'tech space' which can be reproduced wouldn't be something you would risk."

While more than 100 celebrities were victim to the hacking which saw more than 60 photos of the Oscar winner in various states of undress being posted online, leading image development expert Colette Werden disagrees with Jacenko and suggests the invasion of privacy will only increase commercial interest in The Hunger Games star.

The branding and image specialist, who counts Fiat Chrysler Group president Veronica Johns as a client, suggested Lawrence's consistent "on brand" message during previous public appearances and her lack of social media presence has worked in her favour.

"This will not tarnish Jennifer Lawrence's brand in the slightest because she stands for and represents women's strength and authenticity," Werden said.

"This is great for lesser known celebrities who class themselves as sex symbols, in the manner of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, however for those who don't it's a complete brand mismatch so it could cause them a lot of harm, financially speaking, in the future. It would be like a big, black mark against their name."

While Jacenko begged to differ, "From a C or D listers perspective, it's scary to say, but we see it all day every day, this is their dream."

"Indeed," Callaghan said, "Lara Bingle comes immediately to my mind."

"The first phone images of her by Brendon Fevola may well have been genuine, but to me the entire 'paparazzi' topless photos of her on her Bondi apartment balcony scandal, seemed to be completely staged for publicity, as have some of her more recent confrontations with US paps. Curiously these events have all coincided with quiet points in her media profile," he said.

However Mr Callaghan said appropriate damage control is key to ensuring a celebrity's "brand" survives such a stunt or scandal.

"If not handled well, manipulation of such events can end up damaging a celebrity's 'brand' especially if it becomes clear that the intent was to generate publicity in the first place.

"The reality is that this should be a wakeup for the 'Me Generation' that not all things should be recorded on their phones, especially if they have the potential to be used as evidence against them."
