The Hazelhurst Gallery and Arts Centre – a 450-square metre exhibition space in the Sutherland Shire – has managed to lure top Australian jeweller Dinosaur Designs away from its Surry Hill heartland for a new showcase and the artists behind the brand couldn't be more excited.

Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy, fresh from a successful exhibition in Bega and on the eve of the opening of a new boutique in New York, have blown up their trademark colourful designs and created more than 40 large scale works that celebrate their 30-year creative partnership.

"Stephen and I met as art students and Dinosaur Designs really carried us away. At the core of it all we're still both passionate artists and have really loved creating larger-scale sculpture," Olsen said.

All of the works, like their popular jewellery and homewares, are made from resin and will adorn the walls, floor, foyer and even the ceiling of the arts centre in Gymea.

Another opportunity to host an exhibition outside the inner city arts hub was a refreshing and inspirational venture for Olsen, daughter of John Olsen, said of the recent Dinosaur Designs show in Bega.

"These places are thriving with creative people. The enthusiasm shown by the locals was amazing," she said. "They really appreciate art.

"In the regions there is a such a diverse creative community and that really spoke to us. People really want to pigeonhole you into fashion or jewellery but we've been working to show art is all of these things, traditional forms and wearable things, and there were these wonderful bakers, bronze artists and glassblowers who were doing exactly that."

Hazelhurst director Belinda Hanrahan is pleased the couple agreed to take their work on another road trip over the Easter and school holiday period.

"We run an eclectic program and aim to inspire people with art in all its forms, and these great, huge jewellery pieces will do just that," Hanrahan said. "It'll be an incredible explosion of their work. A dreamlike state brought to life."
