While we have been living in tailored ensembles, flares and activewear (in muted tones like black, ruby and cobalt) for the past few seasons, fashion is back to having fun with more sparkle than a Rainbow Brite fan convention and silhouettes larger than The Transformers.

As witnessed at the recent shows in Paris, next spring will be a homage to the colourful characters of the '80s, from the former Mrs Trump to Dynasty's Krystle Carrington. Balenciaga's neon pink high-waisted leggings and purple drapey satin tops were a favourite of the critics, as was the return of Yves Saint Laurent's sexy, leathery, busty looks from 1982 that were reimagined for a modern audience by new creative director Anthony Vaccarello.

This summer Down Under though, the decade of excess and exaggerated shoulders will have a moment in the sun. Here are the symptoms of Ivana exposure to look out for.

Clashing colours

The former Mrs Trump never met a colour she didn't love and so to express her affection for every colour of the pantone, she wore them all at once. If your outfit looks like the receptacle of a child who overdid it on the Rainbow Paddle Pops, go with it. Coming soon is Kenzo's collaboration with H&M and all 113 looks contain elements of fluoro leopard print, musk stick pink and tomato sauce red. The colourful collection will hit stores in early November.

Mismatched shoes

'Tis the season for channelling your inner Helena Bonham Carter or Punky Brewster by donning two different shoes at the same time. Take note, while the colours of footwear should differ, the style should not, that's just a lower back injury waiting to happen. Expect to see a few brave street style types rocking this look Celine's creative director, Phoebe Philo, sent down the runway in Paris.

Pink

It was Ivana's go-to hue for parties at the height of her fame, now Melania Trump has picked up her magenta mantle as we careen toward November, thanks to the fuschia Gucci pussy bow blouse she donned for the second presidential election debate. Pink was a key colour at the recent international collections where it was the hero of the Balenciaga, Celine and Valentino shows. The brighter the blush, the better, especially when it comes to make-up. Make like the Chanel models and combine Ivana's signature style of flushed blush applied high on the cheeks and blue eyeshadow.

Shoulder pads

Off-the-shoulder will continue to be all the rage but wider scapulas are also set to get bigger. Pick up a jacket, by Gucci, that has more embellishment and epaulettes than a highly decorated soldier or be wider set than an NRL star while wearing Vetements range of man-style shirts and oversized jumpers.
