Not since Crocodile Dundee charmed Hollywood has a sandy haired Australian larrikin captured the attention of so many people abroad.
Barrett – 19, 1.85 metres tall and tattooed with the words "0% INTEREST", "PSYCHO" and "MONICA LEWINSKY" – has since walked for Tom Ford, Versace, worked with Calvin Klein and appeared in the Balmain campaign/Kanye West music video for Wolves.
If networking were an Olympic sport, he'd be our Mack Horton. After just a short time living in New York since mid 2015, he has partied with Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop and counts Kate Moss, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris Carine Roitfeld and photographer Steven Klein as close friends.
He appears in the new issues of Vanity Fair and New York Magazine, signalling his rapid rise.
However it's what he has to say, not the world-class photographs that accompany each article, that is the highlight.
Not yet jaded by the industry, his cheeky character shines and no topic is off limits, not even his numerous runins with the law back home.
Local to Byron Bay – "a place where a lot of people don't wear shoes and they walk about barefoot all day and they play their ukulele with their dreadlocks" – Barrett was scouted while stealing matches from the supermarket.
"I wanted to have a cigarette, but I couldn't get a lighter because apparently you have to be over 18, so I decided I was gonna take matches from the counter," Barrett told New York Magazine.
He also opens up about his father, who has been referred to as a "drug cartel boss" for heading up a $9 million cannabis trafficking operation. He was sentenced to eight years prison when Barrett, whose middle name is Kale, was 16 years old. He is now out on parole.
"I just don't like the word cartel," Barrett said.
"To me, they're little gentle giants. My dad is hilarious. Then in the media it's like 'drug cartel.' In my head, that's like guns and heavy drugs. In Byron Bay, there's farms and you just grow a load of weed. He just happened to be good at growing lots of plants."
He also touches on his reported liaison with Paris Hilton and other older women like model Lara Stone.
"It works to my benefit with older women; they treat me like their kid."
