The businesswoman and former first lady told the ABC today that she has returned to full-time work and that she was enjoying life in Brisbane with the cat and the dog.

But when asked if she thought she would be making a return to the Lodge, she wouldn't rule it out.

"I have absolutely no idea but I'm very content doing what I'm doing now," she said.

The words echoed those of Mr Rudd, who this morning told reporters again that he is very happy doing his job as Foreign Minister.

"You know I'm a very, very happy little Vegemite," Mr Rudd said.

In an interview for the program One Plus One, Ms Rein said she was happy to have moved back to Brisbane from Canberra and that she and Mr Rudd are now empty nesters.

The youngest of their three children, Marcus, 17, has travelled to China to learn Chinese.

Ms Rein said there was a lot of hype around the Labor leadership at the moment, but would not be drawn on Mr Rudd's chances.

"Speculation is just that," Ms Rein said. "It's about the future and it's purely hypothetical . . . I can tell you that I'm very content in what I'm doing, as is Kevin."

Ms Rein — who is the CEO of a company that provides business psychology services — said it had been an honour to be be the wife of the prime minister.

But she said that standing by Mr Rudd as he gave his final speech as prime minister in June 2010 had been emotional.

"It was intense, yeah it was intense and I was very aware of the children standing there and all of us as a family being there together," she said.

Ms Rein said that she could understand why people had been interested in her as the wife of the prime minister.

"I think in public life there's a natural interest in who is in and around people who are making key and critical decisions," she said.

But she added that she was very uncomfortable when Woman's Day magazine published photos of her working out in a gym in 2009 without her knowledge.

"I think I felt vulnerable," she said. "I think I felt angry at myself that I wasn't more aware."

This morning Mr Rudd was in Sydney for an address marking the fourth anniversary of the National Apology to Indigenous Australians.
