He also said falling crime rates did not mean Canberra police could grow complacent, and social media was the way of the future in getting safety messages out to the public.

Chief Police Officer Lammers has reflected on his first year in the job and mapped out ACT Policing's priorities for the months ahead.

He stepped into the shoes of former territory police chief Roman Quaedvlieg in July last year after a stint with the Australian Federal Police.

His appointment was a return to familiar territory as he first hit the beat in the capital as a new recruit in 1996 and spent more than 20 years with ACT police.

Chief Police Officer Lammers identified two major goals early on: to drag Canberra's crime rates further down and to find new and innovative ways to engage with the community.

"I had to look at what I wanted to keep the same, what I wanted to build on and what I saw could be improved," he said.

"One of the things that we'd enjoyed over the last couple of years was a reduction in crime across the ACT and I wanted to make sure we continued with what we'd put in place to do that, but then we just didn't sit on our laurels and we did new things to make sure we could reduce crime even further."

The most recent statistics showed an overall 16 per cent fall in reported crime in the 2013-14 financial year, which continued a five-year downward trend across the ACT.

That drop included significant reductions in property crimes, such as burglary, theft and robbery, which police specifically targeted, Chief Police Officer Lammers said.

"None of this happens by accident, we have to work really hard at that.

"One of the things that still remains of most angst to members of the public is coming home and finding their house has been broken into, or their car has been stolen, or being able to walk down the street and feel safe and not be assaulted."

Police Minister Simon Corbell tasked Chief Police Officer Lammers with a focus on tackling alcohol-related violence and anti-social driving behaviours, including drunk driving and speeding, as part of this year's police purchase agreement.

Chief Police Officer Lammers said police had input into the recent two-year liquor act review and would look at what they could learn from the ways other states responded to alcohol-fuelled crimes.

He believes current ACT laws are adequate.

"How we use the current laws in innovative ways is a challenge for us, so how do we actually leverage off the laws we've got at the moment. A lot of it is about internal policy and internal directions."

ACT Policing's alcohol crime targeting team, made up of 24 police officers, was formed in September last year. The team took an intelligence-based approach to determine which venues attracted the most drunks and needed the most police attention.

Police will now draw on their experiences in the past 12 months, as well as initiatives already in place interstate, to put forward options to help protect Canberrans from drunken violence.

"We're looking at how do we use existing laws and regulations to make it even more difficult for people who drink and play up in town so that people who genuinely want to come and have a good time can do that and not be interfered with.

"It's not just a problem in Civic, we find that alcohol is at the root of so many acts of violence, family violence for instance.

"So it's not just about going to nightclubs and pubs and taverns and drinking, it's about looking at the root of alcohol violence throughout the whole community."

He said licensees, employees, and the territory government all played a role in minimising violent crime in Civic.

Chief Police Officer Lammers was also behind a push for police to engage with members of the public through social media channels, in addition to more traditional means such as through schools and community groups.

"In the last 12 months we've developed and rolled out ACT Policing Facebook, which has become very, very popular and is a really quick mechanism for us to get messages out."

He said the instantaneous nature of social media channels meant they were the future of police messaging, and dismissed potential dangers and legal pitfalls that could come with public commentary.

"In terms of letting people speak their mind and say what they like, they have a pretty free rein to do that. We get endless amounts of suggestions on how to do things better."
