A 13-day cold streak had signalled the start of Canberra's winter season, with gas consumption doubling in the ACT as people switch on their heaters.

Temperatures almost fell below zero over the past two weeks, with a total of 13 days with minimums below the monthly average of 6.5 degrees.
The chilliest day was Easter Sunday, when a cold front and high winds dropped temperatures to a frigid 0.6 degrees.
Weatherzone meteorologist Ben McBurney said warmer days were on their way though, in the lead-up to Anzac Day.
''Daytime temperatures are going to be quite nice over the next couple of days,'' he said.
''Wednesday night will be warmer than last [Tuesday] night and it could be our first night of above-average temperatures.''
Skies will be cloudy for Friday's dawn service, although the overcast conditions will keep temperatures at about 10 degrees. Light rain has been forecast for the end of the week.
A spokeswoman for the Australian War Memorial said people should dress warmly for the dawn service and march. even though it was unlikely to be especially cold.
''There are facilities where you can get tea and coffee to warm people up [and] we do have some wet-weather preparations.''
Mr McBurney said the weather was expected to fluctuate for the rest of the month, with temperatures dropping from Sunday.
He said winds would also drop off during the next few days, lowering humidity and giving the air a bit of a chill. ''Sunday, Monday and Tuesday onwards it should start to cool down a bit,'' he said.
Cold temperatures were being felt in ACT households however, with ActewAGL Network Services general manager Rob Atkin saying gas use in the territory had doubled in the past two weeks.
''Over the last two weeks the gas load has doubled compared to figures in early April, [from] 10 terajoules to 20,'' he said.
''The same increase also occurred at around the same time last year.''
Mr Atkin said ACT electricity consumption was yet to increase significantly, with the peak use this month, 390MW on Tuesday, well below the winter record.
''We have previously seen a lift in electricity demand from mid May,'' he said. ''Our all-time winter peak was 617MW on June 15, 2006.''
