$50 million Powerball winner from Canberra a first home buyer with the lot

Well, the Canberra woman who won Thursday's $50 million Powerball lottery is in the market to buy her first home - and there are plenty of agents willing to help her out. A spokesman for Treasurer Andrew Barr also confirmed the woman will still receive the $12,500 First Home Owner Grant, as long as the home costs less than $750,000 and it was new or substantially renovated.

Her $50 million won't be considered income and she'll get stamp duty concessions if the house is less than $550,000 and new or renovated. If she spent the whole $50 million on a house, she'd pay $2.265 million in stamp duty.

It brings the total won in Canberra in first division prizes over the last two years to close to $100 million, according to Tatts Lotteries.

And Evatt Newsagency remains a hotspot for big wins.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought her winning ticket from Gungahlin Centre News.

"The only thing I can say at the moment is I'll be able to buy myself a house; it will be my first home," she said.

"I'll also donate money to charity. I moved to Australia more than 10 years ago so, I want to give back."

So maybe she wants to sacrifice the First Home Owner Grant and look for homes a little over $750,000.

First stop might be a massive pile in O'Malley with a price guide of more than $4 million. Agent Mario Sanfrancesco from Peter Blackshaw Real Estate Manuka said 12 Pindari Crescent was a lavish but comfortable family home. "Please have her call me," he said, with a laugh.

Or else she could bid on Saturday for 60 Vasey Crescent, Campbell, which has eight bedrooms. Agent Greg Hedger from Luton Properties Manuka expected the contemporary classic to go for more than $2 million.

The overnight millionaire might like an address on Canberra's Golden Mile - Mugga Way in Red Hill. No. 139 Mugga Way is on the market for $3.95 million, You'll find gold-plated taps in the bathroom. Agent Nigel Wilson from McGrath Estate Agents said the property had "amazing views right across Canberra".

Then to christen the house with a tempting tipple. Dave Hasler from Jim Murphy's Market Cellars recommends a celebratory bottle of Dom Perignon 1982 Rose for $799 or Johnnie Walker Odyssey whiskey for $1890 a bottle.

And for dinner? French Black Truffles of Canberra manager Jayson Mesman says the Majura truffles sell for about $3000 a kilo and make for a memorable dish.

"I'd suggest some fresh scallops with truffle butter and an oak wine like a chardonnay," he said.

She'll need something to put in the garage so she could swan over to Gulson Canberra in Fyshwick to buy a $357,000 Panamera GTS Porsche, which is ready and waiting on the showroom floor.Perhaps she needs a few more seats. So another option is a $250,000 Range Rover Autobiography which she could purchase from Lennock Land Rover in Phillip.

Then there's fitting out the house. Susie Beaver from Beaver Galleries in Deakin handpicked a couple of artworks that could fit the bill. A $16,000 painting, Commuter Daze by Graeme Townsend, featuring a rooster on a bicycle was chosen for its pure joyous quality. And the large sculpture of three, four-metre-high coffee cups sprouting flowers, Tripla Forza by Denese Oates, would look great in the garden for $75,000.

"We could have spent a lot more for her," Ms Beaver said, with a laugh.

And to spoil herself? Why not rare pink diamonds? Louise Iervasi, from Manuka jeweller Briolette said an investment piece of Argyle diamonds could cost upwards of $80,000.

A weekender at the coast is a must. A five-bedroom, four-bathroom home in Mossy Point is on the market for more than $1.8 million on exclusive Annetts Parade. it comes complete with private boat shed and jetty. Judy and Stephen Brogan have owned the waterfront reserve property for 16 years but are selling up to buy land in the area.

Then there's the party. The National Museum of Australia, sitting on a prime location on the lake, rents out its main hall for $1650 a night. Catering costs about $100 a head - and there should be plenty of brand new friends on the guest list.

There must be fireworks. Tino Foti from Foti Fireworks reckons he could supply a Skyfire-scale fireworks display for about $200,000. "I could probably do one a week for a whole year for that money," he said, with a laugh.

But for all this frippery, the winner herself has the final word. Donating to charity should give her a feeling that no money can buy.

Meanwhile, Gungahlin Centre News owner Rudy Lu said he was excited to discover his Nextra outlet had sold its second division one winning ticket in less than six months.

Just last December the store sold a winning $1 million Monday Lotto ticket.

"Last year we sold a million-dollar ticket, now we've sold a $50 million one - it's really exciting," he said.

"Everyone is very excited and happy. We are the lucky newsagency."

Mr Lu said it was the third major winning ticket sold since he bought the newsagency one-and-a-half years ago.

The outlet has also sold a $200,000 Lucky Lotto ticket.

There have been nine big lottery wins in Canberra since June, 2013, bringing the total won to $94,374,788.81.

Evatt newsagency remains the outlet with the most division one wins in recent times, selling three winning tickets in the last two years for wins of $1 million, $708,049.82 and $687,270.59.

Other recent monster wins have both resulted from tickets bought in Woden - $30 million to a Canberra family in December, 2014 (ticket bought from newsXpress in Westfield Woden) and $10 million to an anonymous winner in June, 2013 (from The Thistle Kiosk in Westfield Woden).

A NSW Lotteries spokeswoman confirmed Thursday's winner was an ACT woman who was a registered entrant.

The winning numbers in Powerball draw 993 on May 28 were 39, 26, 31, 25, 37 and 29.

The Powerball number was 2. Powerball will offer a $3 million division one prize in next Thursday's draw.
