1. MATT OKINE
The former triple J breakfast co-host is headlining a big night of comedy for the very first Academy Comedy Club on Saturday night. Academy nightclub is the new home of weekend comedy in the ACT. It's on from 7pm with support from fellow comedians Michael Connell, Tom Gibson and Harris Stuckey. Tickets $30+bf from comedyact.com.au.
2. MAKERS AND SHAKERS MARKET
A brand new market is arriving in town this weekend from Sydney and Melbourne. The Makers & Shakers Market has 50 stalls of local and interstate makers, selling hand-crafted homewares, food and lifestyle wares. It's on Saturday from 10am-3pm at Albert Hall. 3. SYDNEY WRITERS' FESTIVAL STREAM
From Friday to Sunday, Canberra Theatre Centre is screening the Sydney Writers' Festival into its foyer bar area for free. On Friday, see James Shapiro at 1.30pm. Saturday there's Henry Marsh (1.30pm), Hisham Matar (3pm), and Annabel Crabb and Leigh Sales (4.30pm). And Sunday's lineup includes Andy Griffiths (11.30am), Saroo Brierley and his mother Sue (1.30pm) and Clementine Ford (3pm). No ticket required.See canberratheatrecentre.com.au.
4. NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDENS OPEN DAY
Head to the Botanic Gardens from 10am-2pm Sunday for their open day. During the day there will be craft activities, botanic art demonstrations, face painting, yoga and massage. Entry to the open day is free. You can also go on a ticketed behind the scenes tour of the gardens at 11.30am. Tickets $25 from parksaustralia.gov.au/botanic-gardens.
5. HAYLEY JENSEN
Just over a decade ago, Hayley Jensen finished fourth in the second series of Australian Idol. She then wowed judges on The Voice in 2014. Now based in Sydney, former Canberran Hayley Jensen is coming back to perform at The Street for one night only to launch her EP Past Tense and Present Peace. The concert is on Friday night at 7.30pm. Tickets $30 from thestreet.org.au.
6. ICE HOCKEY
Ice hockey season is in full swing. On Sunday, see the CBR Brave host the Sydney Ice Dogs at Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Centre from 5pm. Tickets at shop.cbrbrave.com.au/home-tickets.
