And from past experience, we reckon we can predict how the day will unfold:
1. Spray tans and GHD curls.
So. Much. Fake. Tan. It'll be gathered in dark splotches on elbows, knees and ankles (and rubbing off under the arms and around necklines) but there's no denying a good tan covers a multitude of sins. And nothing goes better with your fake tan than a good head of GHD curls. Photo: Daniel Ochoa de Olza
2. "$5 on the pretty jockey!"
Girls famously don't read the form guide but they DO choose the winner of the Melbourne Cup based on what the jockey's wearing. In that case, Photo: Peter Stoop
3. Blokes in matching suits.
There's always one group of blokes who think it's cool to match. They're wrong. They've generally shopped at Lowes and drink rum cans. And by about 2pm they're referring to all the ladies as "young fillies". Photo: Craig Sillitoe CSZ
4. Flower crowns.
Feathers and tulle are out and roses, greenery and sweet Williams are in. We're expecting some serious floral statement headpieces to make an appearance at Fashions on the Field. Photo: Barton Flower Bar
5. The heels come off.
Cup Day's a loooong day and your new Nine West purchases feel good for about the first two hours before you start to struggle. You somehow find some inner strength at the end of the day to put them back on to get on the bus to the after party. Photo: Rebecca Hallas
6. 'I'll just have a little lie down'.
If you're not a regular drinker, day drinking can be a real challenge. Most Canberrans kick the day off with a champagne brunch at about 10am and by the time 3.30pm rolls around - it's time for a visit to snooze town. Photo: Jason South
7. The cops'll turn up.
Most punters are streaming out the gates and onto the next venue when this happens. And it's generally one of those blokes from point number three who's in trouble. Photo: Andrew Sheargold
