The Scandinavian Australian Association is again holding its popular Scandinavian Christmas Bazaar on Saturday from noon to 4pm at the Albert Hall in Commonwealth Avenue.
Now in its seventh year, the bazaar transplants a little snow-bound Nordic festivity into usually blazing hot Canberra with Scandinavian fare, gifts and entertainment. A cafe will be open as part of the festivities, with items such as meatball sandwiches, non-alcoholic mulled wine, cinnamon buns and Karelian rice pies, from Finland.
Association president Graeme Traves said the bazaar was popular because it tapped into the traditional picture of Christmas.
"I think people have an interest in Scandinavia in general and the romantic idea of Christmas fits in with snow and Scandinavia and Santa," he said.
Entry is by a gold coin donation which supports the work of the association.
The program for the celebrations on Saturday is:
Noon: Market stalls and cafe open
12:30pm: Scandinavian folk dances with Revontulet; Christmas ring dances (everyone welcome to join in)
1pm and 1.30pm: Christmas songs with The Swedish Choir
2pm: Children's lucia procession with The Swedish School
2:30pm: Scandinavian folk dances with Revontulet; Christmas ring dances (everyone welcome to join in)
