Experts say bushfires will become more common if climate change continues unabated. Photo: Wolter Peeters
THE STORY BEHIND IT: Fires swept through Wentworth Falls last August in an early taster of the impending bushfire season. Water bombing helicopters descended on the fire front along the escarpment as the NSW Rural Fire Service crews fought the flames on the ground. Luckily, thanks to their help, "there weren't any homes lost in this particular fire," Peeters says. This frame, literally in the heat of battle, shows the night air alive with embers as the firemen direct their hose.
