The victim, Terrence Freebody, 89, lay dead on the floor with a combination of stab wounds, cuts, and blunt force trauma injuries to his head, chest, and groin.
His alleged killer, the homeowner, Luigi Costa, 71, had himself called police shortly before.
The defence argues that the crime scene and actions are "bizarre" and betray the work of a demented mind.
But the prosecution says it is the result of a drunk, angry, and violent man.
On Monday, jurors are expected to begin their deliberations on Costa's fate.
Jurors will be asked to determine whether they believe Costa suffers from dementia, which would mean he is not guilty due to mental impairment.
Costa – who has pleaded not guilty – is accused of attacking Mr Freebody after an afternoon drinking at the defendant's Red Hill home on July 22, 2012.
Mr Freebody, who died of blood loss from multiple knife wounds, was discovered by police on the floor of the dining room about 5.30pm.
But the Crown – led by Shane Drumgold – alleges that Costa bashed and stabbed Mr Freebody in a drunken attack, then faked dementia in a bid to dodge conviction.
The jury has heard 10 days of evidence at Costa's ACT Supreme Court trial, including the triple-0 calls made by Costa, and a police recording made after his arrest.
They have also been told that Mr Freebody's blood was on Costa's hands, and from a number of experts who gave evidence that the defendant suffers from dementia.
Prosecutor Shane Drumgold, in his closing submissions, argued that the experts' diagnosis relied upon flawed testing and ignored recognised medical methodology.
"We can be satisfied he was faking the tests," Mr Drumgold said.
The prosecutor also cited brain scans that did not show abnormalities normally associated with dementia.
Mr Drumgold told jurors that before his arrest Costa had been living an active life, managing a large real estate portfolio and household, going on ski holidays, driving and socialising.
"Someone with dementia simply could not live the way he did," Mr Drumgold said.
Mr Drumgold asked jurors to consider whether Costa's alcohol consumption at the time of the killing could explain his loss of memory, his emotional fluctuations, aggression, over-reaction, bad decisions, and disinhibition.
"He was drunk and made some terrible decisions which simply could not be undone," Mr Drumgold said.
"He dug his hole deeper and deeper … tragically and irretrievably."
But Remy van de Wiel, QC, said the prosecution case relied on a "conspiracy theory" that four experts could all reach a false diagnosis.
He said this theory trivialised their evidence, misled the jury, and distorted reality.
Mr van de Wiel urged jurors to look at the evidence and ask themselves about abnormal behaviour.
He asked them to consider why Costa would invite his neighbours over for a drink, only to then to kill and mutilate Mr Freebody.
Why he then called police,did not attempt to flee, did not tamper with evidence, did not hide the murder weapon, did not change his clothes, or did not even wash his hands?
And then why he lurched between singing The Beatles songs and threatening to kill police in the hours after.
"It doesn't make sense. Something has gone wrong in Mr Costa's mind," Mr van de Wiel said.
"Yes there is alcohol [but] how significant is it in the scheme of things?"
Mr van de Wiel said the phone calls and conversations with police showed a man who was confused, inappropriate, and "in the circumstances, silly".
Mr van de Wiel's closing submissions will continue on Monday.
Chief Justice Helen Murrell will then give jurors final directions before sending them to decide on a verdict.
