ACT allocates domestic violence funding to benefit 12 projects

The ACT government announced on Wednesday 12 projects would receive support as part of its annual Women's Safety Grants Program.

Many of the successful initiatives focused on groups of women who often found it difficult to access mainstream support for domestic violence, including migrant women and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

The funding will allow groups to generate educational resources and intervention programs to help raise awareness of intimate partner violence within the territory's lesbian, bisexual, transgender, gay, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) community.

Money will also be directed towards extra training for workers in the disability sector and a trial for an app designed to help people with an intellectual disability report abuse.

The Women's Centre for Health Matters was also funded to run a series of private sector workshops to help businesses identify ways they could help reduce barriers to goods and services for domestic violence victims.

Women's Minister Yvette Berry said a response to domestic violence required a whole-of-community response and was not a problem a government could solve on its own.

"The ACT government wants to ensure that diverse groups of women are supported, and early intervention and prevention programs for children and young people are a priority," Ms Berry said.

"The ACT government wants to make sure that services are responsive to the community's diverse experiences of violence."

She said the grants would help the groups expand their work and better tailor their efforts to the needs of the community.
