The crash statistics, which show 51 per cent of crashes in the region occur on country roads other than state highways, has sparked a new road safety campaign, 'You Don't Have to be Speeding – to be driving too fast on country roads'.
Yass Valley Council road safety officer Melissa Weller said the ACT statistic highlighted the need to communicate with Canberra drivers through the campaign.
She said crashes involving ACT drivers on NSW roads within 100 kilometres of the territory's border featured prominently in past crash data.
"These motorists are used to driving on a relatively young and well planned ACT road network and may be less familiar with conditions on country roads" Ms Weller said.
The new road safety campaign has been funded by the NRMA ACT Road Safety Trust and will run until February.
It aims to educate drivers about behaviour and awareness of varying conditions on country roads.
