ACT Fire & Rescue and ACT Ambulance Service trained in Hume on Tuesday, using a long abandoned black Holden Barina.
The firefighters and paramedics are training for the Australasian Road Rescue Challenge, held in Hamilton, New Zealand in July.
Senior firefighter Matt Dakin said the competition was a great opportunity to work with other agencies, including ACTAS.
"At the end of the day it's just going to make us better on the road, working together," Mr Dakin said.
"Everything you see here is how we'd do it on the road."
"Road crash rescue is one of the big things we do. When it counts, it counts. We need to be good at it because it's someone's life at stake."
On Tuesday afternoon firefighters and a paramedic practiced on their 'victim', administering medical treatment and cutting apart the car to remove him safely.
ACT emergency services minister Mick Gentlemen said he was hoping for the crew from the ACT to win the competition.
"That'd be great, if they could. But really, it is about the camaraderie and the learning," Mr Gentlemen said.
"Because we're such a small jurisdiction it's quite possible for us to bring those learnings back and start to implement them, almost straight away."
"They've learned quite a bit already in the number of challenges that they've had against other jurisdictions."
The ACT will compete against rescue personnel from New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong for the best rescue time.
ACT paramedic Chris Wiid said practicing on different car makes was important as the technology changed.
"We'll go and meet paramedics from all over the world and see if there's different ways of doing rescues, or actually better ways of doing rescues," Mr Wiid said.
