A flaming garbage truck was returned safely to its Queanbeyan base on Tuesday after being spotted alight at Symonston.

The driver pulled over just past the exit to HMAS Harman towards Queanbeyan after being alerted to the fire by an ACT Fire & Rescue crew.

Firefighters used cutting equipment on the vehicle's roof to gain access to the back of the truck. The fire was contained within the confines of the steel framed garbage storage area.
Technicians worked to repair the damaged hydraulics so firefighters could access the smouldering rubbish in the back of the vehicle and fully extinguish the fire.
ACT Fire & Rescue handed the job to Fire & Rescue NSW to complete.
