A government-commissioned survey has found 62 per cent of residents oppose Brindabella Christian College's plan to build a two-storey sports pavilion and car park on Lyneham Oval.

Sports Minister Shane Rattenbury said on Tuesday results from the survey showed significant community opposition to the private school's proposal, and the government would not endorse the plan.

"It is clear from the survey results that there is significant community opposition to the proposal being put forward by [Brindabella Christian College]," he said.

"As the proposal involves the use of public land but lacks the support of the local community, I am unable to support it proceeding.

"The Lyneham Neighbourhood Oval is a facility for the entire Lyneham community and it is vital that the views of local residents and regular users of the oval are taken into account when considering any future uses of the area."

Mr Rattenbury said the residents surveyed were concerned about a lack of green open space, the private use of public land, the car park extension, increased traffic on Brigalow Street and access to the pavilion.

While an overwhelming majority of the college's parents and carers surveyed supported the proposal, the level of support from the broader Lyneham community was less than a quarter.

The government surveyed 676 people from north O'Connor and Lyneham, as well as parents at Brindabella Christian College, Lyneham Primary and Lyneham High.

The decision comes less than a week after the school's board announced a review of its operations amid rising tensions with some parents over a perceived lack of transparency and consultation in key decisions that affect the college community.

The Canberra college's board hit back at what it called a "deceptive and misleading" campaign against a proposal to build a community sports facility on the neighbourhood oval.

The school letter-boxed residents to explain "misinformation" about its plan, which was withdrawn late last year following anger aired at a community meeting.

A development application lodged by the college at the end of October 2014 to build a two-storey sports pavilion and 120-space car park on land next to its site on Brigalow Street was withdrawn amid anger.
