Last year, six infringement notices or cautions were handed to Canberra drivers on every school day, Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

In 2014 more than 1372 infringement notices and cautions were handed out in school zones, an improvement on the year before when 1567 were handed out, but more needed to be done, he said.

The government was working with ACT Police on a blitz which would target speeding and dangerous parking in school zones.

"Accidents around schools can ruin people's lives – from those directly involved, to their families, to the school and the broader community," he said.

"We are rushed in our daily lives but we need to slow down around schools. These new initiatives aren't about annoying drivers, but rather to reduce the risk of a moment's inattention that could be costly for everyone."

In the ACT, the speed limit in school zones is 40km/h between 8am and 4pm.

NSW also has a 40km/h limit, but it applies only to school start and finish times, 8am-9.30am, and 2.30pm-4pm. In NSW, the government has promised to install flashing lights at every school by the end of 2015.

Mr Barr said the government was looking at a number of measures to reduce speeds around schools, including higher profile and more simple signs, and more road marking.

"We need to make sure drivers clearly understand they are entering a school zone. Despite all the current road signage, drivers are still putting children at risk. In some locations this may reflect confusion as a result of too many signs," he said.

He was seeking people's views on 30km/h limits around "particular, high-risk schools".

Last year, the ACT Council of Parents and Citizens Associations surveyed 1100 parents, finding serious concerns about road safety. More than two thirds of parents surveyed had witnessed an accident or near miss around their school and a similar number said their school car parks and drop-off areas were unsafe.
