The study trip saw Mr Gentleman, his senior staffer and ACT chief planner Ben Ponton travel for 12 days through Prague, Brussels, Copenhagen, Berlin and Singapore for an EU World Cities program meeting in Prague.

Those government representatives were also joined by several business figures including ACT Property Council executive Adina Cirson and national PCA president George Katheklakis on the trip.

Of the $65,000 spent for government figures on the trip, $24,880 was spent on flights, $9552 on accommodation, $6952 on travel allowance and $171 on ground transport or taxis, Mr Gentleman's spokesman said.

Of the total, about $12,000 was covered by the EU World Cities program and the total cost of the trip associated with Mr Gentleman and his staffer came to $41,557.

Details of the trip were originally reported by ABC Canberra, including the $2400-odd cost of a 12 person dinner footed by taxpayers, in what Mr Gentleman's spokesman said was a standard "reciprocal" arrangement for such tours.

All business delegates on the study tour covered their own costs, "with the exception of a welcome dinner hosted by the ACT government", the spokesman said.

"It is appropriate for the ACT government to express gratitude to our hosts, and the non-Government members of our delegation, by covering the expense associated with hosting an official dinner," he said.

He said the delegation visited cities that demonstrated best practice examples of urban innovation, environmental sustainability and smart city initiatives.

"The delegation was able to study the practices of the world cities visited throughout this trip, with a view to applying these learnings to the benefit of future planning and urban development practices across Canberra," he said.

Prague also sent a delegation under the same program to Canberra in May last year, and the territory government will host a conference for all partner cities in the program in March this year, with 35 delegates to attend.
