ACT Health on Tuesday rejected confirming a specific figure for a potential $90 million-plus target for budget savings at the hospital, which would be reinvested elsewhere in the health system.

But ACT Health rejected the existence of the savings target, despite Australian Salaried Medical Officers' ACT executive Stephen Crook and other health sector sources telling Fairfax Media the directorate was seeking between $90 and $96 million in savings at the Woden hospital.

A health spokeswoman did confirm the directorate was looking at a four-year "efficiency" drive under its 'Health Innovation Program' currently underway.

But she said that program was agency-wide, not specific to the hospital, and would be reallocated to other parts of the ACT Health system, as part of the directorate's wider efforts to improve Canberrans' health and make the system more efficient.

Despite the directorate's rejection of the figure, ACT Liberal leader Jeremy Hanson on Wednesday claimed Mr Bourke had effectively confirmed some "$96 million" could be cut from the hospital at a public health forum last week.

"I have spoken to a number of people who were present at the forum, who heard the Minister make the admission," Mr Hanson said.

Mr Bourke did not directly respond to Mr Hanson's claim.

Instead, an ACT Labor spokeswoman said the Opposition was "fabricating cuts that don't exist".

"ACT Health continues to look for better ways to deliver our health services, and any identified savings are always reinvested in health, which Dr Bourke confirmed," she said.
