ACT Senator Katy Gallagher, Canberra MP Gai Brodtmann and Shadow Assistant Treasurer Andrew Leigh confirmed they were all affected.

Ms Brodtmann wanted to know how soon DPS had realised their mistake.

"The details were up there for so long and the message from DPS suggests the mobile phones provided to staff as well as their name might be in the public domain," Ms Brodtmann said.

"The government has got to explain how this happened."

Mr Leigh said the Turnbull government was moving from one digital stuff-up to another.

"It's a shame the government isn't so quick to defend the privacy of Centrelink clients' personal details," Mr Leigh said.

Ms Brodtmann received warning that her details had been in the public domain since late December from the DPS on Monday night.

She'd started getting cold calls on the leaked number from life insurance spruikers six weeks ago and couldn't explain why as it had never happened before.

"That's been interesting now that we know," Ms Brodtmann said.

Ms Gallagher said she was amazed safeguards weren't in place.

"I look forward to hearing further from DPS about what happened, how it happened and what is being put in place to stop it from happening again," Ms Gallagher said.

In a letter sent to affected parliamentarians about 8pm on Monday, the DPS said mobile phone numbers of politicians and staff had been in the public domain and usage could be personally attributed to people.

The DPS' letter said those affected could change their numbers and a further update would reveal what else had been disclosed as well as ways to block nuisance callers.

The documents were still available Monday night about 10pm via a cached version from Google but had since been removed by the search giant at the DPS' request.

ACT Senator Zed Seselja was contacted for comment but was unable to respond before deadline.
