The ACT Parks and Conservation Service has purchased four state-of-the-art portable weather stations, which will be able to track conditions near bushfires in real time.

Unlike weather stations owned by the Bureau of Meteorology at Canberra Airport and Tuggeranong, which can be several kilometres away from the fire front, the portable stations can be dropped in within several hundred metres of fires.

ACT Parks and Conservation's senior fire manager Tony Scherl said it will allow firefighters to more accurately monitor conditions when fighting a blaze.

"They're going to be very significant in the way we fight fires in the ACT," he said.

"Once it goes through the testing phase for the next two weeks, it will be used on a regular basis throughout summer and the prescribed burning season."

The weather stations have been bought from Canada, where similar technology has been used for more than 20 years.

Similar stations have also been used throughout the US as well as other states in Australia.

As well as being able to monitor air temperature and wind speed, the weather stations can also track ground moisture and ground temperature, which firefighters have said is a more reliable indicator of fire conditions.

After being dropped into fire zones by helicopter, the stations can be assembled by crews in less than 15 minutes.

Fire management unit leading hand Amanda Johnson said the new tools will prove to be invaluable as the fire season continues.

"We'll be able to get on the ground information that's exactly like it is near the fire," she said.

"They aren't fire proof so we can't get them too close but we can get them close enough to get more reliable information."

Two of the Parks and Conservation's weather stations are currently being trialled in Tidbinbilla before all four are able to be deployed.

Bob Cechet, an environmental science professor at the University of NSW, said plans to purchase the weather stations had been under way for the last year.

"Some of the fires [in the ACT] seen by Parks and Conservation staff had exhibited some extreme behaviour over the last few years and we didn't know why that was the case," he said.

"We wanted to be able to pinpoint what the phenomenon was."

Mr Cechet said the weather stations will be even more beneficial during backburning efforts, letting firefighters know accurate conditions in often hard to access locations.

"The benefit is they'll be able to know the conditions in the high country and be able to control the burns better," he said.
