Yong Chuean Benedict Ang briefly faced the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday morning charged with two counts of committing acts of indecency.

It's the latest in a string of legal headaches for the academy, in which three other cadets have been brought before Canberra courts on unrelated matters since April 2011. Ang, a Singaporean national and member of his nation's defence force, has moved off campus to stay in Canberra with a senior officer.

Police say the 21-year-old entered an officer cadet's room at the military school on May 6 and committed acts of indecency on her.

But Ang, through his lawyer John Harris SC, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The accused man was taken into custody last Sunday but subsequently released on police bail.

Ang, who stood to attention through his brief court appearance yesterday, was supported in the public gallery by members of Singapore's defence force.

At Mr Harris's request, the court lifted a bail condition requiring Ang to report to police once each week after police agreed to the variation.

''I understand the sergeant's concern at the watch house on the night [the condition was set] but now we've had time to make arrangements it's not necessary,'' Mr Harris said. But Ang is still banned from contacting seven people named on court documents, and he has already handed over his passport to authorities. The matter is due back in court for a case management hearing in August.

The accused man is the academy's fourth student to be brought before the court in the past 13 months on charges of a sexual nature, although all have pleaded not guilty.

Another international cadet is embroiled in proceedings in the Magistrates Court, fighting an allegation he left a phone in a shower to film a female student.

Two others have been arraigned to stand trial in the Supreme Court, with one accused of having sex with a classmate while friends watched on a laptop in another room.
