While circus performing is traditionally a young person's game, with some starting not long after learning to walk, more adults are taking up circus classes, starting out in their 30s, 40s or even 50s.
And far from running away to join it, they then go back to their regular lives, jobs, and children.
Warehouse Circus in Chifley runs classes for everyone from three-year-olds through to adults, with plans to launch dedicated over-50s classes in 2016.
Mary Kershaw, 46, started classes when she was 40, and was inspired after watching her kids do it.
"My kids started with the school holiday program and then with the core program and I thought, 'I can do that, I want to do that', so I joined up to the adult's class," she said.
"I'd done nothing at all [before then]. I'd done no gymnastics, no dance, I'd played a bit of hockey and that was it."
While she said she "can't juggle to save myself", she now trains on the trampoline, the trapeze and with hula hoops and said the classes have been great for her self confidence.
"It's really exciting, really relaxing, and really gratifying to see how fast you improve if you just keep at it," she said.
The weekly classes are filled with people from all walks of life and include a bit of everything from juggling to trapeze and trampoline. Newcomers also work on the surprisingly daunting task of learning to do summersaults as a grown-up.
Some join with specific goals in mind, such as 31-year-old Sara Robinson who initially wanted to learn fire twirling and then got addicted to the rest of it.
But others would have never even considered circus classes, like John Lloyd, 44.
"My kids have been doing classes for quite a few years and I got given it as a Christmas present a year ago," he said.
"It's given me a chance to be more active. It's a full on workout. When I first started, it was a bit daunting and some of the sessions I would be really, really sore after. But it's fun – that's the nice thing about it."
