Carolyn Drew, of Animal Liberation ACT, was supported by a small band of protesting supporters on Friday morning, shortly before her hearing began in the ACT Magistrates Court.

Drew is accused of trespassing on a stretch of unleased government land in Hawker, known as the Pinnacle Reserve, while rangers and shooters were conducting a cull in July 2014.

Rangers, who were acting as security, were using infrared goggles when they saw a human-shaped thermal image, which appeared to be scaring off kangaroos.

One ranger told the court he monitored the person, and helped guide another ranger towards her.

That ranger gave evidence that he found a woman dressed all in black, including a black beanie, lying face down on the ground.

"I said 'you've been done, you may as well get up'," he said.

"She had a comment like 'I'm just lying here hugging the ground'."

Drew later identified herself to the ranger.

But she is fighting the charge at hearing. Her lawyer did not articulate a defence in an opening submission.

Outside the court, protesters stood with signs in protest of the government's kangaroo cull.

One sign read "who crossed the line??". Another said "culling is the crime!".

In strange scenes, a female driver pulled up to accost the protesters, saying kangaroos had caused her to crash her car.

Drew is the second kangaroo cull protester to be prosecuted recently.

On Thursday, a hearing finished for Christiaan Klootwijk, 72, who is accused of blowing a whistle near a cull site in July last year.

Klootwijk is facing two charges of hindering a public official.

Drew's hearing will continue before Special Magistrate Margaret Hunter next month.
