A development application has been lodged to demolish the corner block building at 7 Mountevans Street in preparation for a mixed-use development to be built.
The demolition includes the perimeter fence and carpark and the removal of a regulated tree along with other vegetation on the site.
The buildings have been closed since December 2010, when the Serbian club found rising maintenance costs, frequent break-ins and a lack of revenue too difficult to keep the club open. It became the target of vandalism, looting and graffiti.
The Planning and Land Authority approved the club's application to remove the concessional status of the lease over two blocks in the Mawson shopping precinct last year. The site had previously been restricted to club activity only.
A separate development application for a proposed future mixed-use development, with a club space and childcare at ground floor and residential above, would be submitted in the near future, the application said.
The application says a regulated tree was assessed and was they believed the removal of the tree was likely to be approved. It said the tree was only regulated because of the combined circumferences of the many trunks.
An ACT policing spokesperson said police were still investigating a suspicious fire at the abandoned club and had followed several avenues of investigation into the incident.
They are calling for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers.
Submissions close on the development application on October 15.
