Canberra cops are the latest group of law enforcers to become embroiled in a dance-off with their counterparts over the ditch.

With Parliament House and Lake Burley Griffin as their backdrop, Australian Federal Police officers made good on their promise to "show them how it's done" in response to the challenge issued earlier in the week by a group of Kiwi police officers.

Their moves, performed by uniformed officers including one from the bomb disposal unit, inspired a mix of mirth and moaning from punters on Facebook.

"Hahaha good on em have a little bit of fun," wrote Argyro Tsotsos.

"Haha ! That's brilliant - now get back to work - lol !!" Leigh Taafe said.

Other responses were far more blunt.

"Sorry I think the kiwi one was better," Tiana Paku wrote.

"Good see my taxes being put [to a] worthy cause," Kevin Hodder wrote.

"Good effort fellas but the only person with moves is the female coppa front left," Ryan Wheeler said.

Regardless of the public's opinion on their dance moves, the 37-second video racked up 33,000 views in less than an hour.

Like the Harlem Shake before it, the Running Man Challenge is simple.

Dancers are required to do 'the running man' to to 1995 song "My Boo" by Ghost Town DJs.

The original #runningmanchallenge video, uploaded to the NZ Police Recruitment Facebook page, has been view 7.8 million times.

"We catch people on the run every day, this was a new #runningmanchallenge for our team," they wrote.

Other jurisdictions, including the NYPD and Victoria Police, swiftly jumped on board with the challenge too.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton took time out from dealing with more pressing matters to tweet his admiration on Wednesday afternoon, leaving open the possibility that there may be a response.

"Nice effort @nzpolice - leave it with us...," he wrote.
