The Australian National University will seek accreditation from the Australian Breastfeeding Association as part of its bid to become the world's top institution for gender equity.

The university will also develop a breastfeeding policy across campus and ensure that parenting facilities are considered when new buildings are designed. New parents who return to work will be made aware of the university's flexible hours policy.
The commitments were made on Monday after authors of an audit into breastfeeding facilities handed the ANU's executive a suite of recommendations, including that the university buy a pool of bar fridges and make available more change tables.
Andrea Butler, who worked on this year's audit, said she wanted everyone to have the positive experience she had in returning to work while breastfeeding, when she was given her own office with blinds and a bar fridge.
"The point is that that's a one-off, but why can't that be applied to every single woman at the ANU," she said.
"So that's what we've done: we've really created the baseline data, put the recommendations in.
"These things are happening, let's make sure everyone has access to this sort of stuff."
ANU pro vice-chancellor Richard Baker said the commitment to becoming a breastfeeding-friendly workplace was part of the university's broader push to better support parents.
"This is part of a much broader agenda the vice-chancellor has to make ANU the best university in the world in terms of gender equity, so if we're genuine and sincere about that - which we are - we have to start doing things like this right across the board," he said.
"There's bigger issues in trying to encourage fathers to take a greater call in parenting so we've been trying to focus around trying to make the campus more child friendly and family friendly and this is a key part of that."
A 2016 research survey revealed staff were expressing and feeding their babies in toilet areas on campus.
The Supporting Breastfeeding at ANU working group has produced materials to help mothers, including a checklist and maps of the eight parenting rooms across the university.
The University of Canberra received official accreditation as a breastfeeding friendly workplace from the Australian Breastfeeding Association in 2013.
