The Dropbears, Australia's national Quidditch team, have won the Quidditch World Cup in Frankfurt, Germany.
Led by team captain James Mortensen, who is from Canberra, the team beat the US 150*-130.
Quidditch is a sport played in the Harry Potter fictional novel series which has been adopted for the non-flying "muggles", or those without magical powers.
In the game, participants hold a broomstick between their legs, and then run, tackle and throw to score points and catch the elusive golden snitch.
"The thing about Quidditch is it's a full-contact, mixed-gender sport, so it's very unique. And it brings together so many people that don't play sport into a sport, which is athletic – you have to be fit for it," said Quidditch Australia's Nicholas Hirst.
Having previously won bronze in 2012 and silver in 2014, the Dropbears were the first team to beat the US at an international level.
"America has dominated the World Quidditch tournament – they've had years and years of experience," said Hirst.
"We've spent the last six months, we built this team up, trained them hard all across Australia to show how competitive we could be at Quidditch against America and not only did we take the snitch, but we won the game.
"As a team they were so strong together, everybody got on, there was cohesion and that really pushed us over the line."
The Australian team boasted three Canberrans – along with Mortensen – Shu Ying Lee also taking to the field, and Oscar Cozens on the bench.
The trio will now head to Malaysia to play with the ANU Owls at the Asian Quiddich Cup.
