A Canberra son was refused bail on Thursday following allegations he assaulted and abused his frail and elderly mother, for who he was the primary carer.

The woman is aged in her late 60s, and a police statement of allegations tendered in court suggest the man called the woman a "fat c--t", put his hands around her throat and squeezed.
She further alleged that her son used a pillow to push her down to the bed before pulling the pillow off and saying "I'll be back for you" and "I'm going to f--king kill you this time".
The allegations further suggest the man, 54, sprayed his mother with an unknown substance.
She said her son "keeps telling me I'm a worthless piece of shit and he wants me to hurry up and die".
The woman is unable to walk without the help of a walking frame, and can only stay on her feet for a minute or two at a time even with the frame, the court documents say.
Police were called to the Gowrie home on March 13 by the woman's neighbour, who said that at about 3am that day the woman had come to her home and alleged her son had assaulted her.
When police spoke to the woman, they said she appeared breathless, incoherent and hysterical.
The man, who has not been named to protect the identity of the alleged victim, was arrested on a warrant on Saturday and has spent five nights in custody.
On his first appearance in court on Monday, he pleaded not guilty to charges of common assault, reckless threat to kill and choking.
He appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court again on Thursday where he applied for bail.
The court heard the man's mother had attempted to recant her allegations.
But prosecutors opposed the man's bid for release, citing concerns the woman had tried to recant her allegations so that her son could return to care for her.
There was a history of allegations of violent conduct against his mother, the prosecutor said.
Police and prosecutors feared for her safety.
The prosecutor told the court that although the woman had since tried to recant the allegations, it was still a fairly strong case with the interview she had done with police and other evidence.
The man had a 10-year-old daughter who was still living with his mother in Gowrie.
The court heard he was in receipt of a government carer's pension for his role as his mother's carer.
His defence lawyer said the man would agree to not contact his mother or go near the house, and said the woman had her own bank card and access to money without him.
She said he was able to live at another home in Kambah.
On allegations of a violent history towards his mother, the man's lawyer noted the man had no convictions of that nature.
He denied the allegations and had pleaded not guilty.
But Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker said she was satisfied the prosecution concerns were legitimate, and that the mother was clearly frail and vulnerable.
She noted the woman appeared to be under signficant influence from her son.
The magistrate refused his bid for release.
He is next due in court on July 17.
