Thomson’s image of a pitcher in full flight under a pink and purple tinted sky – taken while lying on the ground – took out the prize for best sports photography at the Australian Sports Commission’s Media Awards in Melbourne on Wednesday night.
The 24-year-old said he noticed the clouds rolling in during the game at Narrabundah Ballpark in December last year, and stayed longer than he had planned to capture the sunset picture.
“I saw the clouds, they were in the eastern sky, opposite side to the sunset, and thought maybe it would be impressive when the sunset light hit the sky,” he said.
“I decided to hang around because I saw it coming, I would have left otherwise. I found my spot in the Cavalry dugout, basically lying on the ground.”
The win caps an impressive year for the young snapper, who was nominated in the camerawork category of the Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year Awards and was a finalist in both the sports and features photography sections of this year’s Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association prizes.
“It’s amazing to have my name next to such respected photographers,” he said.
