Bluebird days for Canberra, but skiers should pray for a bit of rain

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Craig Ryan said the bush capital can expect rain later in the week.

"Not expecting much in terms of rainfall and as a result we wouldn't be expecting too much in terms of snow fall over the alpine region," Mr Ryan said.

Hopeful skiers should look for rainfall approaching in weather fronts, but too much rain could wash out the slopes.

Canberrans rose to the coldest morning of the year so far on Wednesday morning, with temperatures dropping to minus 6.3 degrees just before 7.30am.

Clear skies and low winds are spelling warmer days for Canberra over the next few days, with highs in the low 10s but overnight tempratures dropping below zero.

"There's no cloud to trap that heat in overnight,"Mr Ryan said.

He said this meant cooler temperatures at night with some morning fog expected until Thursday.

However in the nearby alpine resorts, clear skies and dry conditions would create perfect snow making conditions.

Thredbo communications manager Susie Diver said the "bluebird" days - clear, sunny days - would allow the snow guns to operate.

"We are looking forward to basically a week of clear, cold nights to freshen up the snow making, which is great," Ms Diver said.

"Absolutely stunning at the moment. Nothing looks better."

Ms Diver suggested people looking to try their hand at the snow for the first time this season get up to the mountains early to beat the school holiday crowds, but also to pack plenty of sunscreen.

Along the south coast, the bureau's Mr Ryan said water tempratures were hovering between fifteen to eighteen degrees, meaning it was warmer in the water than in Canberra.

"The swell will be, at this stage, we're looking at it decreasing in height as the week progresses," Mr Ryan said.

Mr Ryan said there was a small chance of light showers around the Bateman's Bay area with tempratures in the mid to high 10s.
