Bowen Place Crossing, the pedestrian underpass helping walkers, joggers and cyclists complete Lake Burley Griffin's main basin loop without needing to dodge traffic, has been recognised at the Australian Institute of Architects' 2016 National Architecture Awards.
Lahznimmo Architects won the Walter Burley Griffin Award for the design of the $10 million project, announced at a ceremony in Sydney on Thursday night.
It wasn't the only ACT contender to snag a national gong, with Bates Smart taking home the Emil Sodersten Award for the glitzy Vibe Hotel Canberra Airport.
The Canberra projects were among more than 890 entries vying for an award this year.
The long list was eventually dwindled to a shortlist of 79, with an expert jury choosing the recipients of 40 the national accolades.
Lahznimmo Architects and Bowen Place Crossing were also recognised on the territory stage in June when the project was awarded the coveted Canberra Medallion at the Australian Institute of Architects' 2016 ACT Architecture Awards.
The crossing, which was unveiled in September, 2015, also snagged the Sir John Overall Award for Urban Design at the time, acknowledging its successful competition procurement process and design-led outcome.
Bates Smart won a string of accolades for the hotel at the ACT ceremony, including the Commercial Architecture award, Interior Architecture award and the Light in Architecture Prize.
National jury chair and immediate past president of the national institute, Jon Clements, said the 2016 awards demonstrated the value of Australian architecture and its benefit to the public in cities and towns across the country.
He said the jury was particularly impressed to see a number of projects delivering big outcomes from limited resources.
"Throughout the judging it was evident that architects had clear commitments to their clients' aspirations but also to environmental and social sustainability: creating solutions that explored invention in favour of fashion," he said.
Elsewhere, ARM Architecture won the coveted Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture with the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre.
The Australian Institute of Architects' 2016 National Architecture Awards have been held annually since 1981.
