Bravery medal for Evatt Primary student Aaron Zorzi for saving mother's life

When his mum collapsed twice in a day, he knew exactly what to do.

"Mum was unpacking and she collapsed, so I went and got the neighbours and we helped get Mum inside, then a couple of hours later it happened again," he said.

"I got a pillow and put it under Mum's head, called the ambulance and then I called the neighbours."

The Evatt Primary School year 3 student received a bravery medal from ACT Policing's Constable Kenny Koala program and Education Minister Shane Rattenbury in a school ceremony on Friday for his actions.

It was a visit from Constable Kenny and his handler Stewart Waters a week and a half before the incident that helped Aaron remember what to do in an emergency.

Mr Waters said he and Constable Kenny had spoken to Evatt Primary students about emergency phone numbers, when to call them and what else to do in such a situation.

"I was extremely impressed that a boy of that age had gone into 'what do I do' mode," he said.

"It's an achievement for the program; if this is all it achieved in a period of time, then it's fantastic. We have one young boy who does this heroic act automatically and saved his mum's life."

Aaron's mother, in her first trip out of hospital since the incident, and his father were at the school to see him receive the bravery medal, which was presented in front of his classmates.

The student said he was looking forward to having his mother home and said his classmates had been impressed when they heard about his actions.

Mr Rattenbury said Aaron's efforts deserved to be recognised with the bravery medal.

"I wanted to personally acknowledge the maturity and bravery Aaron displayed by taking such quick action during what would have been a very stressful time for him," he said.
