There’s something so civilized about afternoon tea. It requires perfection with the cutlery and fine china as much as the afternoon delights of cakes, pavlovas, slices, scones and yes the oh-so fashionable cup cakes and macarons.

Then there’s the tea (coffee if you must) with a myriad of choices - no teabags mandatory - and always served with a silver strainer. But what is rather nice is an accompanying and welcoming glass of something sparkling. And that’s what the Hyatt has done with Lerida Estate’s Zenzi rosato frizzante, launched as the new and carefully researched sparkling blend of viogner and pinot gris grapes with a distinct ‘pinkness’ and a label to match. It’s a local creation and just so summery and lovely.
The launch brought together the Lerida team with owners Anne Cain and Jim Lumbers on hand to happily open a bottle or two and a posse of local media to enjoy an afternoon tea. Some were first timers to the pleasures of this ritual but I went back the following week to see how the Zenzi was going and who the afternoon tea devotees were.
A significant birthday, an engagement and office party combined and a retirement gift of a Hyatt weekend were among the reasons for being there. But who needs a reason. Life’s pleasures shouldn’t let work get in the way.
