Retailers across Canberra are preparing for a busy day of bargains with billions of dollars expected to be spent nationally.
Canberra Centre manager Amanda Paradiso said the complex would be open from 8am to 7pm to allow shoppers to take full advantage of the sales.
"The lead up to Christmas has been a great success and early indications from our retailers point to this year's Boxing Day sales period being as popular as ever," Ms Paradiso said.
"Post-Christmas sales are a key period for our retailers and Canberra Centre is committed to providing a convenient and enjoyable shopping experience for our customers during this busy time."
Chain stores are cutting prices on clothes, homewares and appliances.
Target will offer extended hours and 20 per cent off some toy brands and up to 30 per cent off new release CDs and DVDs.
Retail giant David Jones anticipated one million people would visit its stores throughout Australia on Monday with another one million customers to purchase clearance products online.
Research commissioned by the department store chain revealed two-thirds of New South Wales and ACT shoppers planned to buy homewares and one in six would purchase clothes.
Shoppers in the capital were also most likely to buy designer labels.
Boxing Day will mark Myer's biggest trading day of the year with 1.6 million people to set foot in a store.
Monday will also mark day one of its promotion, Australia's Biggest Stocktake Sale, where shoppers will be offered up to 60 per cent off clothes, footwear and accessories, homewares and electrical items until January 29.
Canberra Business Chamber chief executive Robyn Hendry noted an increase in pre-Christmas sales throughout the capital and questioned the impact it may have on the Boxing Day spend.
"It may be that we just like a good shop after Christmas to buy those things we've been thinking about in the lead-up but it may be that some people have taken advantage of the pre-Christmas sales and we see a softening of that trend," she said.
Ms Hendry also said it would be interesting to track the impact of international flights on spending through the Christmas period.
"Some of those markets that we'll have visitors from, considering they're coming out of Singapore, some of those markets don't celebrate Christmas in the way we do," she said.
"I think it'll be interesting to see if they can pick up different trends in January than we've seen previously."
