The renowned car festival is celebrating its 28th year, with over 1700 cars registered already.
Summernats is the biggest automotive festival in the southern hemisphere, and attracted 123,000 visitors last year.
Organisers formally launched January's festival on the lawns outside Parliament House on Monday.
One of those keenly waiting for the start of Summernats with anticipation is motoring enthusiast Shane Hayward, who was at Monday's launch with his son Jack.
He said a love of cars starts as a child, and runs deep as a life-long passion.
"Instead of having skateboards growing up, I had posters of cars and street machines," he said.
"My dad bought me to my first Summernats when I was a kid, and I've been every year ever since."
His son Jack, 5, proudly talks about his dad's Monaro.
"It's come a full circle now. My dad took me, and now I'm taking him," said Mr Hayward
Starting on January 1 and running for four days, festival goers will enjoy cars, competitions, music, and even a chance to see a world record.
Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez says he'll have another go at breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest number of cars to do a simultaneous burnout.
"We're going to smash the pants off it this year, with 100 plus cars," he said.
"What a fantastic way to blow out the cobwebs on New Year's Day, with an automotive orgy."
Canberra currently holds a few records, including the fastest time to break concrete blocks on a human chest, the longest caricature marathon, and of course, the most Christmas lights.
Economic Development Directorate head Gary Rake expects Canberra will break the burnout record in the New Year.
"We're going to move from a recent Guinness World Record where we had the Christmas lights in the city to new one where we're going to have them lighting it up at Exhibition Park," he said.
The Radiators, Bliss n Eso and Illy will be featured in this year's festival, which is great business for Canberra, Mr Rake said.
"It creates jobs for Canberrans, it creates interest, and it brings people in to see just how wonderful our national capital is."
There will be a grand parade on the final day of the festival, running through the heart of Canberra.
"It's great to have the city crews, rolling down Northbourne Avenue," said Mr Rake.
"Last year more than 30,000 people turned out to see it, with more than 200 cars participating."
"It's a fantastic opportunity for enthusiasts - a lot of pride, a lot of passion, a lot of time and a lot of money goes into these events."
Car enthusiast Max O'Reilly says his Dodge Charger isn't just a favourite toy; it's a way to relax.
"It's a therapy – the car doesn't do the work for you. You have to listen to every noise, every hum," he said.
Summernats runs January 1 – 4, 2015.
